A lovely set of three oval paper mache stacking nesting boxes with a primitive cottage appeal from Simply Primitives. These are a bit different than most others that I've seen -- you probably won't want to nest or stack these for display; they're just too pretty!

The unique thing about these nesting boxes is that the lid designs were appliqued before they were adhered to the boxes. They're not smooth like regular fabric covered boxes might be. These are lumpy, bumpy and wrinkled and full of flaws (all of which make add up to make these wonderfully primitive items!)

Let's start with the overall dimensions. The largest of the three boxes measures approximately 14 by 10 by 2 inches. The medium box is 12 by 9 by 2 and the smallest of the three comes in at about 10 by 7 1/2 by 2 inches. All together they stack about 6 1/2 inches tall.

All of the lids and the medium box are covered with a mottled tan with light brown spotty fabric which resembles a heavy tea or coffee stain. The largest and smallest boxes are covered with a small floral print.

The lid of the largest box is decorated with a flower applique. The flower petals and leaves are felt and the floral center is a smalled stained crocheted doily. All of the pieces have been blanket-stitched to the fabric.

The medium box has a posey basket appliqued to the lid. Again, the basket and floral pieces are cut from felt and blanket-stitched. The flower stems and basket detail are done with floss in a backstitch.

I particularly like the traditional design on the smallest box. Heart in hand with disconnected leaves along with tulips, appliqued, blanket-stitched and even a few French knots in tulips.

Yep, there's a lot going on with this set. Now before I leave you, I'd like to point out what I consider to be the flaws in these pieces. I like the lumpy bumpy texture. I love the design. The colors are great. I don't even mind the way the insides of the boxes are sloppily finished. But the workmanship on one detail is somewhat less than I would consider to be good.

Here's why -- the edges of the lids are designed so that they appear to be blanket-stitched too. To accomplish this part of the design, the maker (over in China by the way) had to do each lid's decorative stitches BEFORE the fabric was adhered to the lids. When the fabric was draped and applied to the lids, the blanket- stitching did not center perfectly. You can see some of these places where the blanket-stitches are off-centered in the photos below. I should also mention that these boxes smell a bit stale to me, sort of like a mix of glue and cardboard (well duh, Linet, that's exactly what they're made from!)

Despite the off-center stitching, overall I consider these to be well-done and attractive pieces. They're a good blend of folk art and prim blended with a bit of shabby cottage. I guess it's not easy being perfect. (wink) Oh, and by the way, we have several of this item in stock. The style from item to item stays the same but the handwork varies slightly from set to set so yours might look slightly different than the set shown in our photo.
