Hanging wooden saltbox house for the birds makes a very cool primitive accent, indoors or out.
The front of the birdhouse is cut from 1/2 inch plywood washed with deep red and the trim pieces are from 3/16 inch plywood and are painted black. The living quarters in the rear is cut from 3/4 inch pine and all exposed surfaces are finished with a dark brown stain. The house hangs from a length of heavy gauge steel wire (which will likely rust if exposed to the elements.) There's a little rusty star nailed to the roof and the perch is a square nail.
This birdhouse is new but is made to appear as if it's old and weathered. The paint allows some of the wood underneath to show through and the edges of the wood are roughly cut; some of the wood is cracked and splintered as can be seen in the photos below. This item is handmade in the U.S.A. by craftsmen in the area of Lancaster, PA.
To my eye, the birdhouse does not have a finish sufficient to hold up in the weather the way it is. I think it would do okay in a sheltered area like a covered porch, but if it's exposed to rain or snow, I believe that moisture would eventually seep into the wood unless you give it a several good coats of an outdoor acrylic finish of some sort. There is no access to the rear box area of the house to clean it out so my suggestion is that this item be used for decorative purposes only. Not including the hanging wire, the birdhouse measures about 10 inches tall, approximately 6 inches wide and 4 inches deep.
Please note -- these are handcrafted items and can vary slightly from piece to piece. The overall style will stay the same but the finish on each birdhouse might appear a bit different from the one that is shown in the photo.
